A couple of years ago, during my time in Puerto Rico, I would go to a local video store to get my fill of the latest DVD’s. While there I came across several VHS movies that I had seen as a child, brought back lots of memories. One movie, however, caught my attention, a movie I had not seen in years. I remember seeing Howard The Duck for the first time when it first came out in 1986. Back then this kind of animation was top of the line to some of us. I loved the movie; it was funny, cool and entertaining in a cheesy, corny 80’s kinda way. Sad to say I did not have a VCR to watch it again so I decided to search for an alternative. Lucky for me, someone had actually made an mpg copy of the movie which I was able to get my hands on. It was great to revisit this movie. I have always felt 80’s movies had style and the fakeness of it made it more entertaining because we knew it was fake right off the back but it looked good anyways. Unlike today when we have such great technology that when someone makes a fake character and actually looks fake, it tends to fail terribly.
Well, I had recently shared the movie with a co-worked who said her kids loved the movie. Oddly enough I had not shown the movie to my kids yet. Just never occurred to me. Last night we decided to watch the movie, seeing as my Internet service was down, I figured what better time to spend with the family. The kids found the movie quite funny, though I had forgotten how adult like the movie really was, it was not too bad. My kids were able to ignore somewhat the adult parts of the movies and simply focused on Howard as a cartoon like character. Kinda like watching a kid’s show that has some kind of Muppet or person in a suit. It was fun, watching a cheesy 80’s movie with my kids was a lot of fun.
So, anyone ever seen this movie? What did you think about it? Ever shown it to your kids or would you consider showing it to them? May not be a movie apt for kids by today’s standards, I thought it wasn’t too bad.
