The World Thru My Eyes - I speak my mind and man does it like to talk.
I remember years ago when movies were around $5 to $6 and we still had $1 and $2 theaters. 20 bucks got you plenty of people and plenty of food for the latest or at least something that came out about a month ago.

Today, $20 can barely get 3 people thru the doors and you can forget about snacks. I went to the theaters this weekend to see Madagascar 2 with my wife and kids. It was a great movie, funny as hell, but it cost me $32 to get us in. But while I think the movie price is high, it pales to the prices of the food at the theaters these days. One look at those prices and you can understand 2 thing:

1) Why barely 5% of the people walking into the room are carrying at least 1 soda and a popcorn bag while everyone else is empty handed.

and

2) How they (the theater) are trying to make profits in just 2 or 3 sales.

Here is what I saw that I almost had a heart attack and the cashier told me not to crack my head over the prices, they are all expensive.

Medium soda - $5
2 Medium sodas and a Large popcorn - $17
Medium soda and a Nachos - $11

This was enough to make me almost run out the theaters. I was too afraid to look at the rest of the stuff. The candy's were probably as expensive as the package they came in. If they sold one come per movie schedule, they could probably make a huge profit at these prices. I seriously doubt they are paying $350 for one of the bags of coca cola syrup for the soda machine. I can buy 5 - 2 liter coca cola bottles at the store (some stores) with 5 bucks. We actually waited till the movie was over to eat at BK's where with $20 we got tons of food and still had change.

This is so wrong on so many levels. It's a shame one can not even go out to enjoy a movie after a long week of work and school without one losing one's pants in the process. This should be illegal (that was just a rant). I can see why some people prefer to download these movies from the Internet. It's funny to think that supposely prices went up because of pirated movies but it seems to me that pirated movies went up because of theater prices. Funny how that works.

So when was the last time you went to the movies and paid for the food there? Discribe the expression of your face at the site of the prices. I can give you an idea of what mine looked like:

When I was young and had children, movies were a rarity.  Now that only one is left at home, we go often.  It is not cheap, but then for $30 for an afternoon of fantasy, it is affordable now.

I know the feeling, when we go we usually have to take the kids since finding people to take care of them is not an easy task. Even with family.

Colleen and I went to see "Eagle eye" this weekend 7.25 each for a mantinee 5.00 for a large soda and 4.00 for a small popcorn, the candy we bought in a store and spent around another 5.00 doing that. So to watch one movie {which was real good BTW exciting as all get out} it cost the two of us 29.50 for two hours of "entertainment. I am old enough to remember 3 feature movies 7 cartoons and 2 instalments of two different series all for .25 Cents.

Yup.  Which is why for at least 10 years now we go to maybe 2 movies a year as a family.  Of course the kids may go with friends and we hand them some money to go etc.  But for us all to go (wife, 4 kids and myself) it is a little too much.  Fortunately, my oldest is 18 and she pretty much does her own thing now as far as movies.

I bring my own candy.  I never buy the movie food.

In Lynchburg they have Movie 10 where they play 10 movies at all times and charge about $1.50 a movie.  It's a college town and it's the favorite place to go.  On Tuesdays the movies are......get this.......75 cents!!!   Whenever we go to Lynchburg we go to the movies.

One of my sons spent the whole day in there watching movies one after the other.

We get a military discount but still don't go to the movies nearly as often as we used to because of the expense.  We usually buy the boys a kids' popcorn+drink+candy and then share a popcorn and soda and candy between us and the little one.

It IS expensive.

I know a lot of people who either don't buy any snacks and drinks or who bring their own in, but I think part of the fun of going to the movies is the entire experience, including movie popcorn and goodies.

In Hawaii the theater on post would have a free movie every so often and that was pretty cool.
